Whippoorwill

This is not a whippoorwill. Nor will it ever be

For many a night I listened to the whippoorwills with their distinctive high shrill call. I never know what one looked like. They are nocturnal and nature has allowed them to develop quite a camouflage. I heard them but never saw them. I was surprised. It was diametrically opposed to what my imagination had conjured up. It is small and of mottled plumage. I appears almost owl like. A mouse of a bird. Therefore I will post a picture of what I would rather think of it to be.

Whippoorwills of Palm Harbor

Whippoorwill's call sound at night,
At quarter past nine at the end of light,
Calling out with muted thrill,
Always is their nightly drill,

Letting know to all around,
" I am here safe above the ground",
They sound it out for all to hear,
"I am high above and have no fear".

I am Whippoorwill and here I be,
Not for any eyes to see,
Though seeing you is easy for me,
Sitting high here, in my tree.

For I am Whippoorwill and here I be,
Up above where you can't see.
